It is still pushing up at the rate of 5 mm (0.20 in) per annum. The present landform is considered to be a mid- Pliocene peneplain, arched and deeply dissected, through which the Kinabalu granodiorite body has risen in isostatic adjustment. In geological terms, it is a very young mountain as the granodiorite cooled and hardened only about 10 million years ago. It was pushed up from the earth's crust as molten rock millions of years ago. The granodiorite is intrusive into strongly folded strata, probably of Eocene to Miocene age, and associated ultrabasic and basic igneous rocks. Mount Kinabalu is essentially a massive pluton formed from granodiorite which is intrusive into sedimentary and ultrabasic rocks, and forms the central part, or core, of the Kinabalu massif. Low's Peak can be climbed by a person in good physical condition and there is no need for mountaineering equipment at any point on the main route, but climbers must be accompanied by accredited guides at all times due to national park regulations and may experience altitude sickness. Mount Kinabalu has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage status. Among this rich collection of wildlife are famous species such as the gigantic Rafflesia plants and orangutans. The mountain and its surroundings are among the most important biological sites in the world, with between 5,000 and 6,000 species of plants, 326 species of birds, and more than 100 mammalian species identified. In 1997, a re-survey using satellite technology established its summit (known as Low's Peak) height at 4,095 m (13,435 ft) above sea level, which is some 6 m (20 ft) less than the previously thought and hitherto published figure of 4,101 m (13,455 ft). It is protected as Kinabalu Park, a World Heritage Site. The mountain is located in Ranau district, West Coast Division of Sabah, Malaysia. With an elevation of 13,435 feet (4,095 m), it is third-highest peak of an island on Earth, and 20th most prominent mountain in the world by topographic prominence. Luckily we were riding a Rocky Mountain Instinct 990 29er with an almost identical suspension setup at the same time so we know the suspension – while noticeably linear and fairly pressure sensitive – is basically sound.Mount Kinabalu ( Malay: Gunung Kinabalu, Dusun: Gayo Ngaran or Nulu Nabalu) is the highest mountain in Borneo and Malaysia. Unfortunately that’s not quite how it panned out because of a shock issue that caused severe high speed spiking on our sample. RockShox’ seemingly omnipresent Reverb Stealth dropper post means seat height is never an issue and powering up the fire road of Bootleg Canyon things seemed all set for an impressive first ride of the demo. That means you can have a really steep seat angle and steeper head angle if you prefer clawing up similarly steep climbs or something much slacker and lower for carving the corners. The rotatable Ride-9 chip within a chip feature that holds the front of the shock also lets you change geometry and/or shock rate. You get the same adjustment via the dials topping the Fox 34 fork too, so prepping it for long stints of climbing or just adapting ride feel for changing terrain is no problem.įox 34 damping woes are sorted, but the chassis still flexes: Russell Burtonįox 34 damping woes are sorted, but the chassis still flexes The Fox CTD shock comes with a handlebar remote control, which means you can firm it up or lock it out almost totally with the flick of the under-bar trigger or dump the low speed compression damping by releasing Descend mode. Ride and handling: floats like a butterfly…Ĭombine stiff cranks, a light bike with light wheels and a semi-slick rear tyre and the Altitude certainly isn’t slow at gaining its namesake. We know riders who’ve ragged Rocky’s solid state ABC pivot bushings through long seasons of very varied weather without an issue, so we’re not worried about excess wear. A lack of cross bracing bridges means plenty of mud room even with the big 2.4in Ardent tyres. While they’re not needed here, there are DMD front derailleur mounts built into the chainstay front end. There are multiple exit points for the cables and hoses, either underneath the top tube just ahead of the shock (used for a shock remote on this bike) or under the bottom bracket, where you’ll also find an extra bottle mount with fancy blue anodised bolts and chainguide mounts moulded into the frame. The level of construction control is evident in the use of subtle blister bumps for each internal cable entry port rather than simpler-to-make rubber grommet-plugged multi-control holes.
